Project Runway Fans Are Going to Get Mad
Project Runway fans, Tim Gunn has a message for you about the show's new season: Get ready to yell at your TV. "It's a real roller coaster," says Gunn of Bravo's fifth installment of the design competition, which premieres Wednesday (10 p.m. ET). "[Fans] are going to get mad - early! There are some big surprises: Favorites won't be there anymore, and I can only imagine how the blogs are going to explode over some of the challenge winners. We say that each season has a different DNA and boy, is that true." - Rennie Dyball
Gunn gave PEOPLE a sneak peek of each contestant.
Speaking of Project Runway...

Everyone's favorite fashion design reality show is back! No, I'm not talking about a brand new season of Project Runway, although that would be cool, too. I'm talking about Project Runway Philippines, our country's answer to the hit TV show that got fashion freaks all saying "In fashion, one day you're in and the next day, you're out." Those who are starting to miss Project Runway's colorful personalities will not be disappointed by Project Runway Philippines, whose equally diverse cast of characters promises to breed not only awe-inspiring fashion creations, but wickedly watchable catfights as well.
Project Runway Philippines sticks to the formula of the original, which is basically 14 aspiring designers competing against one another to create the best clothing designs, with a mentor to guide them through their projects and two judges and one host-judge deciding their fate in the competition. What gives this version a leg up on its American predecessor is it's got an all-Pinoy cast local fashionistas can better relate to.
The first ever batch of Project Runway Philippines reads like a dream team of promising Pinoy talent.
The competitors are: Aries Lagat, Ava Paguyao, Bo Parcon, Charette Regala, Eli Gonzales, Ivan Rabora, Jaz Cerezo, Loida Hunter, Lord Maturan, Lorymer Villareal, Mara Reyes,Philipp Tampus, Winnie Chua and Veejay Floresca.
Breathtaking Fil-Am model Teresa Herrera takes over Heidi Klum's host-judge role for the local edition of Project Runway, while accomplished fashion designer and School of Fashion and the Arts professor Jojie Lloren does a Tim Gunn in the local version. Judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia find their Pinoy counterparts in couturier extraordinaire Rajo Laurel and Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist/former supermodel Apples Aberin-Sadhwani. With such a stellar cast, how can you go wrong? Mentor Jojie Lloren considers himself a more approachable version of Project Runway's Tim Gunn. "I think he's harsher, and harder," Jojie says of the silver-haired, strait-laced fashion pro. Host Teresa Herrera also puts her own stamp on Project Runway Philippines. Asked how she bids goodbye to eliminated contestants in lieu of Heidi Klum's trademark farewell "Auf Wiedersehen", she coyly replied, "You're gonna have to watch the show!"
Judges Rajo Laurel and Apples Aberin-Sadhwani confess that they are die-hard fans of the original Project Runway, that's why they jumped at the opportunity to be part of its Philippine incarnation. "We're both really passionate about fashion, so naturally when it first came out, the first thing we did was watch it on TV," Apples declares. Apples, with 20 years of industry experience under her belt, is no stranger to the fashion world. "I can cull [from] my experience and help all these young designers grow because they're really talented so sometimes you just need to give them a little guidance," she claims. However, since this is a competition, sometimes tough love has to be dished out, and no one does it better than her American alter ego, the acid-tongued Nina Garcia. "Of course, it's best to be constructive, not to hurt them if we don't have to, but then again we don't mince our words," Apples continues. Rajo, who claims that he's the nicest among the judges, shares that judging the contestants' works is "one of the hardest things I'd have to go through". "It's going to be heartbreaking, but make it appear to them that it's not the end of the road," Rajo shares. "At the end of the day, it's the opportunity that you had that you have to make the best of."
All of the people involved in the show, whether on cam or behind the scenes, are confident in the contestants' abilities. As Rajo succinctly puts it, "The future of Philippine fashion looks bright because of Project Runway."
Make sure to watch Project Runway Philippines as it catwalks to your TV sets on July 30, Wednesday at 10pm, only on ETC SBN Channel 21. You don't want to be out of fashion now, do you?
